About

Alex Pratley is a London-based Baritone hailing from Guildford, Surrey. In 2022, he graduated with distinction from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with his Master of Music in Vocal Performance, where he studied under Gwion Thomas and Jonathan Gunthorpe. During his time there, he was fortunate to work with industry professionals such as Stephen Barlow, Tony Kraus, and Charlotte Forrest on a regular basis and had masterclasses with Paul Farrington and Dylan Perez, the latter of which he also performed with, singing “I Hear An Army” in a VoxBox concert of Samuel Barber.

His operatic roles include King Hildebrand/North Wind in Dove’s The Enchanted Pig (RBC), Surgeon in Stephen McNeff’s Banished (RBC), Madame Madou in Offenbach’s Mesdames de la Halle (RBC), Discord in Charpentier’s Les art florissants (cover, RBC), Ghost Child 3 in Turnage’s Coraline (RBC), Voltaire/Dr Pangloss in Berstein’s Candide (KCLOS), and Curio in Handel’s Cesare (KCLOS). His opera scenes include Guglielmo Cosí fan tutte (RBC), Achilla Guilio Cesare (RBC), Count Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro (RBC), Dido and Aeneas ( RBC), Le Mari Les Mamelles de Tiresias (Morley Opera), Alidoro La Cenerentola (Morley Opera).

Before his studies in Birmingham, Alex graduated from King’s College London with BA Hons in English Literature and worked as a Lay Clerk at Guildford Cathedral from 2018 to 2021. He also works extensively with the ensemble Horizon Voices as their resident bass/beatboxer and as an educator within their outreach programme, leading in-school workshops across the country, and sings in multiple professional ensembles in London.

Concert

In the concert hall, Alex has performed as a soloist in Oratorios such as Handel’s Messiah, Vaughan-Williams’ Christmas Oratorio, and Haydn’s The Creation. He has also developed a reputation as an intelligent interpreter of English song. In 2022, he was invited by the A. E. Housman Society to perform at the centenary celebration of A. E. Housman’s ‘Last Poems’ at St. Laurence’s, Ludlow, where he curated a programme of lesser-known settings of Housman poems alongside George Butterworth’s famous “Shropshire Lad” song cycle and John Ireland’s setting, “We’ll to the woods no more”, from Last Poems. In 2023, he was invited to perform at The Firs ‘The Birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar’ as part of a Lecture Recital series led by Elgar Biographer Richard Westwood-Brookes, sponsored by The Elgar Society, alongside fellow musicians, Hannah Morley and Charlotte Forrest.

Concert
